BETHLEHEM - Leroy Harman found a quiet spot in Freedom High School's gym, trying to relax before his Northeast Region Class AAA quarterfinal bout Friday night. That was hard for the Williamsport 125-pounder to do in the heart of wrestling in eastern Pennsylvania. Turns out Harman was the only Millionaire to survive the winners' bracket on the first day of the tournament. The Williamsport sophomore made quick work of Parkland freshman Mike Marano, decking him in 1:06 to advance to today's semifinals. Jersey Shore's Cody Mason will give Harman some local company, winning his 285-pound quarterfinal by fall. Action resumes today with first-round consolations at 9:30 a.m. Consolation finals are set for 5 p.m., followed by championship matches at 6:30. The top three at each weight advance to next weekend's state tournament. Williamsport teammate T.J. Tressler trailed Wyoming Valley West's Kyle Krasavage 7-2 before being disqualified in the 103-pound quarterfinal at the 5:34 mark. Jersey Shore's Cody Ulmer (125), Kelob Herman (130), Dylan Shields (145) and Taylor Stabley (171) all came up short in the quarters. Williamsport's Steffen Yaskoweak (112) and Jersey Shore's Dalton McLaughlin (119) lost in the preliminaries and fell into the consolation bracket. Yaskoweak got decked by Northampton's Greg Rinker in 1:25. Parkland's Brandon Davis pinned McLaughlin in 1:02. Shore's Elliot Packer (140) did not participate because of injury. Harman (24-4) made quick work of Marano, aggressively hunting him down repeatedly before getting the first-period pin. During the week, it was hard for him to find work, with only two teammates advancing this far with him. "I did go to South (Williamsport) one day and work out with some of them, but I didn't have a practice partner to work with most of the time," Harman said. Northampton's Jordan Glykas, another physical type, will be Harman's next foe in today's semifinals. Glykas (21-10) won two matches Friday night to advance, including a come-from-behind win over Hazleton Area's Mark Uliano in the quarters. Mason (24-8) was leading 2-1 in the second period before picking up a headlock on Hazleton Area's Matt Starrick and finishing him off in 3:42. |
